The Utah State Hospital was established in 1885 in Provo as the Territorial Insane Asylum. Today, it still stands in its original location, one of Utah's oldest original public institutions.
The Utah State Hospital Museum tells the hospital's 120-year history through photos and artifacts displayed in two rooms at the historic Old Superintendent's Home. The museum's exhibit provides a window into the history of mental-health treatment.

The defendant re-entered Utah State hospital on August 11, 2005 and remained there until 2008. While in the hospital, no staff experienced Mitchell as being paranoid in a pathological sense. In February 2006, a bill went before the Utah legislature to allow prosecutors to apply for forcible medication on defendants to restore their competence to face trial.

At the conclusion of the competency evaluations, and while incarcerated in the Utah County jail, Ron Lafferty attempted suicide in December 1984. This resulted in severe injury and mental damages. Following the suicide attempt, Ron was held at the Utah State Hospital for several months.
